My Pets Surgery

Perhaps the most nerve wrecking times we face involve surgery for ourselves or our pets. With this in mind it is our goal to assure you that we take every surgical and dental procedure seriously. We continuously monitor up to 12 parameters including your pet's heart, blood pressure, temperature,respiration, and the anesthetic agent. If your pet is under 12 weeks, or over 6 years of age we require pre anesthetic blood tests. In all other cases we strongly recommend pre anesthetic tests no matter how short the procedure.

Most elective procedures (ovariohysterectomy-spay) for canine and feline patients under 45 lbs. involve a single keyhole incision between 6 and 8 millimeters in length. To put this in perspective ... the dark papermate pen below is 7 millimeters wide at its widest. It is not possible to do these procedures through any smaller incision by, any other procedure (Including Endoscopic Surgeries which require multiple incisions , longer prep and surgery time.). This single tiny incision allows for the shortest surgery time, least incisional trauma, most pain free, and quickest recovery possible. This technique is a modification of the surgeries taught to me by Dr. Greely Moore, former owner of Loop Veterinary Hospital and Dr Henry Fairleigh Louisville, Kentucky. Both of these gentlemen had surgical skills light years ahead of their times. It was a great pleasure to have worked for them.

Of course all patients have pain medications available to them. Patients over 45 lbs require a slightly larger incision due the size of the tissues being removed. Neutering of dogs actually requires the largest incision of about 15 to 20 millimeters (around 3/4 of an inch) due the the size of the testicles.

Admission time for elective surgery is 7:30 a.m., and discharge time is between 4:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. . We re-check our patients incision site in 7-10 days. An overwhelming majority of all surgeries do not have any complications. However Pets will be Pets, and occasionally chew out sutures or become overactive. We will give you a specific set of discharge instructions to minimize the possibility of any problems.
